Western Wildfire Summary-06/24/96
WESTERN UNITED STATES (ENN) - Firefighters are struggling to
control several wildfires that are burning in the western
United States. In northern Arizona, hundreds of people have
been evacuated from their homes and ten hikers had to be
airlifted out of the Grand Canyon because of fires. By
Sunday night, 17,000 acres in the State of Arizona had been
scorched.
Fire crews from across the nation are coming in to help battle
the blazes, some from as far away as New Jersey and Florida.
One fire has burned about 1,500 acres along the North Rim of
the Grand Canyon.
- A 2,000 acre blaze is burning outside the Apache Sitgreaves
National Forest, located in the northeastern part of Arizona.
- In Nevada, at least four homes located 60 miles south of Reno
have been destroyed in a wildfire that has burned about 4,000
acres.
- The largest wildfire burning is in Utah. On Sunday, at least
8,000 acres have burned about 55 miles south of Salt Lake City.
More than 200 firefighters are battling this fire.
- In Southern California, firefighters in Riverside County are
battling a blaze that has scorched about 1,400 acres.
