The FAA is reporting that a DC-9, ValuJet Flight #592, enroute from Miami to Atlanta, GA, has reportedly crashed in a "swampy" area approximately 15 miles from Miami. According to airport officials in Miami, there was reported "smoke in the cockpit" of the doomed plane and the pilot attempted to return to Miami. There were reported to be 109 souls on-board. The crash reportedly occured at approximately 14:15EDT.
Search and Rescue units from Miami-Dade Fire/Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard, and several other agencies are either on-scene or enroute to what is being described as an "everglade area." As the impact area is entirely underwater, some difficulty in reaching the scene can be anticipated. Airboats and other waterborne craft will need to be used by rescuers to reach the crash site.
No survivors were immediately reported, and only very small pieces of the plane were seen by helicopter units that have been searching in the area. No cause for the crash has been determined. Additional details are coming in and ENN will provide additional reports as the circumstances warrant.
