**LEAD STORY**

UNABOMBER SUSPECT IN CUSTODY...

By Steve Macko, ENN Editor

The Federal Bureau of Investigation may have finally caught the elusive Unabomber, who is suspected of killing three people and injuring 23 others since 1978.

53-year-old Theodore John Kaczynski was taken into custody by federal agents on Wednesday afternoon near Lincoln, Montana, which is a rural area located about 50 miles northwest of Helena. Kaczynski was not immediately placed under arrest or was charged. The United States Justice Department said on Thursday morning that they expected to formally charge the suspect today.

Agents at the scene of Kaczynski's wilderness cabin, which was described as very small, perhaps with dimensions of 20x20, said that they have found explosive chemicals and bomb-making materials in the cabin. The cabin was said to not have electricity or indoor plumbing.

Federal agents said that they found a partially assembled bomb in the cabin. It will be on this evidence that he will be charged with one count of possession of a bomb on Thursday. With that charge, authorities can then take their time to further build their case against the suspect and then, most likely, charge him with other Unabomb crimes.

FBI and ATF agents found the partially assembled device while X-raying one of the many boxes that were found in the cabin. Agents also reportedly found bomb diagrams and books. One federal agent said about the search, "It's going very slowly because we're not sure if it's booby-trapped. We have an explosives ordnance team X-raying everything before we touch it." The search of the cabin and an outbuilding is expected to take several days.

Neighbors in the area said that the suspect was a "hermit" and rarely talked to anyone in the dozen or so years that he lived there. The bearded, long-haired Kaczynski was wearing torn black jeans and a black shirt when he was led away by federal authorities in handcuffs.

Kaczynski totally fits the profile of the infamous Unabomber. In 1958, he graduated from Evergreen Park High School, which is located in the southwest Chicago suburb of Evergreen Park. He graduated from Harvard when he was barely 20-years-old. He is highly educated. Kaczynski received a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Michigan. Later, he was a math professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

The FBI was said to have Kaczynski's cabin under surveillance for for a number of weeks. Authorities said that they believed that they had been on the right track, since the beginning of the year, when they were provided information by Kaczynski's family. Kaczynski's mother sold her house in the DuPage County suburb of Lombard, Illinois earlier this year. While in the process of moving things, relatives came across some old writings of Kaczynski's and saw that they bore a remarkable resemblance to the Unabomber's manifesto. The relatives then contacted the FBI.

Rick Smith, who just retired from the FBI, and who was a key member of the Unabomber Task Force, last week said, "The FBI's fairly certain they have the right man."
