COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (EmergencyNet News) - At least 30 people were reported killed and 250 others were wounded when a suspected Tamil terrorist set off a bus bomb on Thursday outside a train station in the business district of the Sri Lankan capital. At least three children from two schools in the area and two police officers were among the dead victims.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Police Superintendent Palitha Perera said, "It definitely looks like the work of the Tigers." The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are the main separatist group on the island-nation.
Police said an officer on a motorcycle was chasing a bus involved in a hit-and-run collision with a car when the bus exploded. The driver of the bus, the only person aboard, was among the dead.
The explosion occurred just after noon at the intersection of several of the city's busiest streets and near a police station. The front of the train station was badly damaged, and the police station slightly damaged. At least 40 vehicles on the streets were destroyed and about 50 nearby shops were damaged by the blast.
The deadliest terrorist attack in Colombo came in January 1996, when a Tamil rebel suicide-bomber crashed a truck into the Central Bank, killing 88 people, wounding 1,400 and destroying eight buildings in the business district.
