Attempts at "Patronage" Shouldn't Stop Homeland Security
By C. L. Staten, ERRI Sr. National Security Analyst
Chicago, IL -- As previously stated on this very page, the rhetoric and apparent anger generated by the current debate over Homeland Security is partisan, political, totally inappropriate, and should be cause for the American people to vote whomever continues to engage in it out of office. The reality of the present delay in the passage of a Homeland Security bill in the U.S. Senate is actually a battle over "patronage," union membership, and potential future political support for one political party or the other.
As both a life-long union member, a corporate CEO, and member of several senior management teams, this author finds this conflict incomprehensible and not in the best interests of either organized labor or the ultimate survival of the United States. While virtually everyone understands collective bargaining, and the need for fair and equitable treatment for all federal employees, the importance of the establishment of a Homeland Security cabinet department must at this time supercede the needs or desires of those who would attempt to achieve political gains at the expense of better safety and security for all U.S. citizens. This issue is just too important to allow it to be bogged down in the constant "inside-the-beltway" bickering that proceeds every election.
Frankly, most Americans are sick and tired of the rhetoric and political posturing in Washington. The time for real action has come...the Homeland Security department must be established before the current Congress leaves town. The best interests of our country must be placed above those of any political party or personal ambition. A viable compromise must be attained now, before another horrendous act overtakes our country. To do less would be to fail the American people and that can not be allowed to happen...

TODAY'S CENTRAL FOCUS:
Musharraf "Tells It Like It Is" To The Muslim World
Opinion/Editorial/Commentary
By: Steve Macko, EmergencyNet News Managing Editor
C. L. Staten, ERRI Sr. National Security Analyst
PAKISTAN: Saying Islamic countries will remain backward unless they concentrate more on scientific and technological development, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf "told it like it is" to the Muslim world. He said after a recent trip to the US that Muslim nations are internally involved in fratricidal conflicts and are perceived by the outside world as terrorists, with little attention being given to their future success.
Being as blunt as possible, President Musharraf said: "Today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most unenlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race." The Muslim Ummah, or the Islamic world, he said was largely "living in darkness." ERRI's Clark Staten said this morning that he couldn't agree more, and that Muslim countries can't realistically expect to live their lives in the 12th Century and then compete with other countries in the 21st Century.
Musharraf made his comments in an address to a conference of science and technology attended by ministers from Muslim countries. President Musharraf said the time had come for Islamic nations to take part in collective self-criticism. He argued that once such an assessment is made, it would not be difficult to realize that the entire Islamic world was far behind the developed world.
The Pakistani president said none of the predominantly Muslim countries has ever paid much attention to educational and scientific development. He asked the countries participating in the conference to concentrate on scientific and technological development in order to compete with the rest of the developed world.
President Musharraf said that unless something was done, the Islamic
world and Muslims would always be perceived as increasingly backward,
illiterate, and those who only indulge in extremism and violence. And, many
of the Muslim masses, floundering in the ignorance and poverty of this
self-imposed 12th Century mindset, will continue to try to blame the Western
societies, who they see as somehow oppressing them...and thus motivating
more terrorism. The time has come for this cycle of failure to end and for
Islam to recognize that, like all of the great religions of the world, they
must adapt to the changing world around them.
