LOS ANGELES (EmergencyNet News) - A fire in a second-floor apartment forced three people to jump from a window to escape flames on Sunday. The blaze was apparently started by a Christmas tree.

One man suffered third-degree burns over 20 percent of his body and was taken to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center's burn unit. A 6-year- old boy and a woman were treated for smoke inhalation.

The LAFD was called to the North Hollywood apartment at about 0900 PST after the 6-year-old woke up and found the Christmas tree on fire. The three victims jumped from a window after someone moved a trash bin below to cushion their fall.

STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA (EmergencyNet News) - Sawdust inside a burning silo ignited a flash explosion that injured three firefighters on Sunday. The fire department was called to scene to handle a blaze inside a plant silo. After working on the fire involving burning wood shavings for about two hours, an explosion occurred just before noon.

Fire officials said that oxygen inside the structure and flames from the shavings proved to be an incendiary combination with sawdust floating inside the half-full silo. One of the firefighters, Richard Gems, was on top of the silo, trying to pour water inside when the blast ripped a hole through the roof. He fell 60 feet into the fire, where he sustained serious burns.

Firefighter, Jason Stewart, fell off the side of the silo and into a trailer bin containing shavings. The 19-year-old Stewart was also said to be in serious condition. Another firefighter was treated and released for a minor injury.
