NEW JERSEY STATE POLICE IN SHOOTOUT

by James J. Fay, ENN NYC-Metro Correspondent

Two individuals wanted for the carjacking and beating of a 17-year-old West Virginia youth, were shot by NJ State Troopers on the New Jersey Turnpike in the vicinity of Carteret, NJ, at approximately Exit 11, on Wednesday, December 6, at approximately 1200 Hrs., EST. One of the fugitives died from the shooting.

Troopers on patrol on the Turnpike observed a red Porsche traveling at a very high rate of speed. The Porsche did not stop or slow down when pursued by police, resulting in a crash of the Porshe into a guardrail on the Turnpike. The occupants of the car ran from the accident, to a creek surrounded by tall grass. At that point, one of the occupants pulled a gun on pursuing Troopers. The troopers responded to the threat and fired at the two, killing one, and wounding the other.

It was subsequently determined that the red Porsche, bearing West Virginia license plates, was stolen from its owner in West Virginia on November 27th. At that time, the teenage owner offered the two a ride and they later beat the youth and escaped with his car.

The surviving fugitive was reported in satisfactory condition with two gunshot injuries to his arm.
