ERRI EMERGENCY SERVICES REPORT-EmergencyNet NEWS Service-Monday, January 19, 1998-Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday Vol. 2 - 019

ANAHEIM (EmergencyNet News) - A Southern California freeway chase ended in the shooting murder of a 40-year-old Orange County correctional officer on Sunday. The victim was the fifth Los Angeles-area law enforcement officer to be shot in less than a week.

According to police, four men in a car chased a sports utility vehicle carrying a 40-year-old woman, her husband and 10-year-old daughter down the eastbound lanes of the 90 freeway at about 2300 PST on Saturday. The woman's husband, who was driving, exited the freeway in an attempt to elude their pursuers. When he tried to re-enter the freeway, the suspects' car ran them off the road at an on-ramp.

The family got out of the car and the suspects pulled up next to them. The woman tried to talk to the men, but was shot several times. Police investigators say that they are not sure what really happened.

The victim worked at the California state prison in Lancaster. Police say that it does not appear that her status as a corrections officer had anything to do with the attack. The suspects are described as four white or Hispanic males.
