DETROIT (MPSN) - Two Detroit Police officers were shot, one critically, as they stopped to investigate two young men they thought might have been school truants. Officers Kelvin Patrick and Cathy Warren of the 12th Precinct were rushed to Grace Hospital after both were shot several times while sitting in their police car. Officer Patrick, who got the worst of it, was in critical condition. Police took six people in for questioning but were not immediately certain whether the trigger man was among those arrested. Police say it was particularly disturbing to them that the gunman calmly walked over to the police car and smiled as he shot the officers. Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, who rushed to the hospital emergency room, called the shootings, "cold blooded."
In an update to this story, Officer Patrick, age 39, was shot several times in the chest and may have suffered permanent spinal damage. Officer Warren, age 45, was in good condition with a gunshot wound to the arm. Both officers are said to be 20-year veterans and were transported to Detroit's Grace Hospital via patrol cars.
DETROIT (MPSN) - Three people were shot outside a suspected dope house on Detroit's north end on Friday morning. They were the latest victims of what police describe as an on-going drug war in the neighborhood. On Wednesday, two people were shot just two blocks from Friday's incident. And on Tuesday, three people were wounded in two shooting incidents in the same area as well.
Montgomery County undercover officers had the two men under surveillance when they attempted to rob a Silver Spring convenience store. The officers followed the suspects, who police said may have been involved in several other robberies, for about 30 miles through Montgomery and Prince George's County before attempting to pull them over.
Police tried to block the suspect car's path on an exit ramp onto I-95, but the car rammed a Maryland State Police trooper and continued for about 15 miles before driving off the road and stopping adjacent to the Federal Courthouse. Police caught the first suspect within 10 minutes as nearly 100 offciers surrounded the perimiter. The other suspect remained at large.
