Bad Heroin Reported in Philly

By Clark Staten, ERRI Analyst

Chicago, IL., February 21, 1996, (ENN) A batch of "bad heroin" has been reported in Philadelphia that may have killed as many as five (5) people in the past 24 hours. Four deaths in Philadelphia and one in Chester County are all being linked the drug. Three of the deaths were within blocks of each other in the Kensington and Juniata Pk. areas of Philly. Another victim was found, needle still in his arm in N. Philadelphia. The fifth victim died in E. Cain Township, but was believed to have purchased his drugs in the Germantown area of Philly. At least one report said that the deadly heroin was supposedly mixed with "cocaine".

PPD says that they are unsure if these deaths are connected to a rash of more than twenty (20) overdoses that occured in Philadelphia on Monday of this week. Those overdoses were being attributed to "Polo" or "Death Shot" , which was first reported when it caused more than 100 overdoses in the NYC/New Jersey area. "Polo" is heroin allegedly cut with scopolamine (Previously Reported by ENN). Emergency Medical authorities are urging extreme caution regarding this drug and say that it may have been exported to any number of other areas.
