A nationwide alert had been issued for a company truck carrying the explosives and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) had joined Gwinnett police in the probe of the robbery, Branch added.
"A person or persons unknown stole a white 1986 one-ton flatbed Ford truck...it had in it 24 pounds of dynamite, 108 blasting caps, and 29 tubes of ANFO (ammonium nitrate with a fuel mixture)," Sgt. Branch told reporters.
This was not the first theft of explosives from this Norcross firm, according to Branch. On Oct. 8, 1995, 1,000 blasting caps and 550 pounds of ammonium nitrate were also stolen from the company. Sgt. Branch said, "That case is still not resolved." "Whether or not it's related to this theft, we do not know," he continued.
The truck has "Controlled Blasting Inc." printed on the front doors in black lettering on a white surface. At the rear of the truck is a special compartment, that carries explosives, with the number "44" printed on it in large black letters. The truck's Georgia license plate number is SB 9981.
Gwinnett County Authorities warned that anyone who spots the truck should not approach it. Anyone locating it or having knowledge of the incident should immediately contact their local BATF office or call Gwinnett County police at (770) 513-5300.
