Details of the F-117A Stealth fighter-bomber now operational in the Persian Gulf.
Length: 65 feet, 11 inches.
Wingspan: 43 feet, 4 inches.
Speed: In excess of 600mph
Weight: 52,500 pounds.
Range: Unlimited with air refueling.
Armament: Laser Guided Munitions and Missiles
Engines: Two General Electric F-404 engines.
Crew: One.
Date Deployed: 1982.
Builder: Lockheed Martin Corp.
Capability: Low radar signature enables this fighter to penetrate into well-defended airspace, largely undetected. While not
invisible to enemy radar, it shows up so infrequently and for such a short time that the enemy has difficulty locking missiles
onto the aircraft. Usually armed with laser-guided bombs or missiles . During the Persian Gulf War the F-117A was used
to attack many first-day targets and was the only aircraft to bomb strategic targets in downtown Baghdad. No F-117s
were ever reported hit by enemy fire. Boomerang shaped, the F-117's precisely angled surfaces and radar-absorbing paint
and materials create the stealth effect.
