(ENN) In a shootout on Detroit's east side, a Detroit Police officer and a suspect were both killed on Tuesday. The 32-year-old officer, identified as Patrick Prohm, was reportedly shot in the head by a 20-year-old male who may had been high on crack cocaine.
The car that the suspect was driving was stopped for a routine traffic violation at East Vernor and Joseph Campau at about 0100 EST. A check of the automobile indicated that the auto, a Cadillac, was a stolen vehicle. After being stopped, it was reported that the driver of the car got out of the vehicle and started dancing "with unusual gyrations." It is believed that this individual was high on crack cocaine. The suspect then pulled out a gun and started shooting. Officers returned fire.
At that time, at the scene, it was not known that anyone, other than the officer that was killed, had been hit by bullets. The shooter and two other men who were in the stolen car were brought to Detroit's 1st Precinct to be booked. It was at the station when the suspect began complaining of pain and collapsed. A Detroit Police spokesperson said, "No one knew anyone else was shot at the scene." The suspect was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital and later died from his wounds.
