Bulls Win!! Initial Reports of Trouble
By ENN News Team
Chicago, IL, June 16, 1996 (ENN)--The first reports of "looting" came from the CFD 4th Battalion Chief at 21:30CDT at Roosevelt and Loomis on Chicago's near Southside. The fire companies were immediately pulled from the scene amidst reports of, "they're throwing rocks and bottles at us."
At 21:45CDT the 7th Battalion reported a "working fire" at 4409 W. Maypole and "shots fired" as soon as the first companies arrived at the scene.
At 21:55 and 23:00, sporadic reports of people blocking traffic were reported at several locations on Chicago Avenue. Burglar alarms were set off in numerous locations on the near Westside, often by windows being broken.
At 22:20, a CFD ambulance was sent to 409 N. Central for the person shot on the street. Concurrently, at Division and Dearborne, the 18th District Police commander was requesting additional assistance for crowd control.
22:25; at Divison and Cicero, reports by an unidentified ambulance of rocks and bottle thrown at them. Continued reports of "shots fired" and "loud reports" continued to be received from numerous South and Westside locations.
At 22:30, Fire/Police/EMS units were extremely busy, but it began to sound as though they were "holding their own", against lawlessness that might be occurring.
22:35; At Central Park and Roosevelt, a working fire was reported by Engine 77. And, at the same time, at 79th and Sangamon several simultaneous garage arsons were reported.
22:45; 4th Battalion enroute to still alarm at 1410 W. 14th Street, in a CHA High-rise. Continued reports of arson to vehicles and buildings are coming in from 1300 block of Roosevelt Road, 2200 block of Roosevelt, Roosevelt and Cicero, and at other locations.
22:55; CFD Engine #32 reported that it was returning to quarters with its windshield and one side window broken by "thrown objects."
23:05; CPD was reporting a couch set on fire, in the middle of the street at Central Park and Dickens. At Bloomingdale and Kedzie, CPD was concurrently reporting a "man down...shot." Numerous "trash", "dumpster", and "abandoned auto" fires were being reported across the South and Westside.
23:05; At Cicero and Washington, a CFD ambulance was sent for a "man shot." Cause of the shooting unclear at the time of this report. Concurrently, reports were received of a large, unruly crowd gathering in the vicinity of Clark & Elm. Police were attempting to disperse them.
Summary at 00:00CDT
Continued reports of sporadic minor fires
and "shots fired" continue to be received, but no reports of
emergency service workers being injured or major incidents have
been received. Some looting has occurred and windows have been
broken in several parts of the city. While Police, Fire, and EMS
units are still busy, it is believed that cool, rainy, foggy
weather and extensive police planning may have helped to contain
worse violence.
ENN will provide continued reports in the event of major events later tonight and will be providing coverage of events surrounding Tuesday's city sponsored celebration at Grant Park in downtown Chicago.
