Eight Killed and more than 50 Hurt in Southern Storms

Storms and tornadoes in Alabama and Georgia over the past two days have killed eight people and injured dozens of others. The Governor of the State of Alabama declared a state of emergency on Wednesday when a storm cut a ten-mile swath of destruction in the west-central portion of the state. Trees were reported snapped, electrical power to 20,000 people was cut and various amount of other destruction by the powerful storm was reported. A dam in one city burst and sent millions of gallons of water into city streets.

In Dallas County, located north of Selma, Alabama, four people were killed and 40 others were injured when a tornado struck a mobile trailer park. Two people were killed and 13 others were injured when another tornado struck another trailer park in Montgomery, located about 50 miles east of Selma.

Later in the evening on Wednesday, a thunderstorm was said to be responsible for the death of one person who was killed when their mobile home was destroyed.

In East Georgia on Thursday morning, Five people were injured by a tornado that struck a rural area near the town of Wrens. Seven homes were reported destroyed and 13 others suffered heavy damage.
