Podcast: Emerging Youth Violence; Who's Too Blame?

Source: C. L. Staten

An EmergencyNet News dissertation about who may be to blame for the current rash of school shootings (circa 1998). The comments appear to be just as pertinent today as they did during the time it was recorded. This is an editorial/opinion/commentary recording.

Russia's Putin Named Time 'Person of the Year'

19 Dec 2007 - 12:00 CST

Putin is named Time 'Person of the Year'

NEW YORK - According to the Associated Press, Time magazine on Wednesday named Russian President Vladimir Putin its 2007 "Person of the Year."

The nod went to the Russian leader because of Putin's "extraordinary feat of leadership in taking a country that was in chaos and bringing it stability," said Richard Stengel, Time's managing editor.

Putin, 55, is enormously popular in Russia, presiding over a resurgent economy flush with revenue from oil and natural gas. But critics say he has moved the country away from Russia's democratic reforms of the 1990s by tightening control of the media, courts and parliament.

"He's the new czar of Russia and he's dangerous in the sense that he doesn't care about civil liberties, he doesn't care about free speech," Stengel said.

[Emergency.Blog editorial/opinion/comment: If Time magazine were Komsomolskaya Pravda, Putin is 'person of the year'. Otherwise, Gen. David Petraeus and his efforts for freedom of the Iraqi people wins "Person of the Year" honors...in the opinion of Emergency.Blog staff.]

Drudge Gives Rare TV Interview to Sky News

Drudge Gives Rare TV Interview to Sky News
The man behind one of the world's most influential news websites says there's everything to play for in the battle to win the trust of TV viewers, newspaper readers and web users - and, he says, it won't all go the way of the big corporations.

"So who do you trust at any level? It just comes with what you're familiar with and you have to really read a lot of varied sources..."

Cause of 'Magic' Fire Determined as Accidental; At 40 Percent Containment
STEVENSON RANCH, CA: A fire that scorched about 1,500 acres in the Stevenson Ranch area of the Santa Clarita Valley was sparked accidentally by construction workers welding, authorities said Tuesday. The blaze, dubbed the Magic Fire, broke out near The Old Road and Magic Mountain Parkway about 2:15 p.m. yesterday. No structures were damaged, and no one was hurt, said Deputy Ed Hernandez of the county Office of Emergency Management.
"The cause has been determined as accidental, caused by construction workers welding," Hernandez said. Because of the high winds, mandatory evacuations were in effect for Mallory Drive and Waycott Way, Hernandez said. The fire was about 40 percent contained. About 250 firefighters were on the scene, along with two helicopter crews. --

NIE: Terrorist Threats to the US Homeland

18 July 2007

National Intelligence Estimate
Terrorist Threats to the US Homeland

FROM: OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE

The Estimate, Terrorist Threats to the US Homeland, followed the standard process for producing National Intelligence Estimates (NIEs), including a thorough review of sourcing, in-depth Community coordination, the use of alternative analysis, and review by outside experts. Starting in October 2006, the NIC organized a series of roundtables with IC experts to scope out terms of reference (TOR) for the Estimate. Drafters from throughout the Community contributed to the draft. In May, a draft was submitted to IC officers in advance of a series of coordination meetings that spanned several days. The National Clandestine Service, FBI, and other IC collection officers reviewed the text for the reliability and proper use of the sourcing. As part of the normal coordination process, analysts had the opportunity--and were encouraged--to register ?dissents? and provide alternative analysis. Reactions by the two outside experts who read the final product were highlighted in the text. The National Intelligence Board, composed of the heads of the 16 IC agencies and chaired by the ODNI, reviewed and approved the Estimate on 21 June. As with other NIEs, it is being distributed to senior Administration officials and Members of Congress. The report in .PDF format can be found at: http://www.dni.gov/press_releases/20070717_release.pdf

Transcript of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Confession (pdf file)

The alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks has admitted his role in them, and 30 other plots in a hearing at Guantanamo Bay, the Pentagon says. "I was responsible for the 9/11 operation, from A to Z," said Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a partial transcript from a closed-door hearing.

"I was the operational director for Sheikh Osama Bin Laden for the organising, planning, follow-up and execution of the 9/11 operation," Mr Mohammed told the hearing, in a statement read by a representative.

Mohammed also said he beheaded U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl, according to the transcript. ERRI counter-terrorism analysts said that is not presently clear how much of Mr. Mohammed's statement is "jihadist bluster and misdirection," and how much is fact.

The Battle of Thermopylae - The Movie

08 Mar 2007

Review/announcement of Historic Movie - "300"

Spartans - 300 In the 5th century (in 480 BC), the Persian empire fought the city-states of Greece in one of the most profoundly symbolic struggles in history. This most famous battle in that war took place at Thermopylae. The battle was a badly mis-matched struggle between Xerxes and (at least) hundreds of thousands of Persians versus 300 Spartans and a small number of their Thespian, Tegean, and Mycenean allies.

Sometime before the battle, the Spartan Dieneces was told that when the Persian archers let loose a volley, their arrows would hide the sun. To Dieneces that was just as well. "For if the Persians hide the sun," he said, "we shall fight in the shade" (See picture - right). Dieneces' comments were highly illustrative of the warrior culture of Sparta. Leonidas and the Spartans had been trained to do their duty, and, having received an oracle that Sparta must either lose a king or see the city destroyed, Leonidas was convinced that his final duty was to fall in battle. The spirit, tenacity, and heroism of the Spartans has become a standard for warriors up to and including the present day.

A new, highly stylized, and fictionalized vision of the Battle of Thermopylae is being released tomorrow (09 March 2007) by Warner Bros. The movie entitled "300," is the story of the Spartan warriors who knowingly fought against tremendous odds until they were all killed. The movie is rated "R" and is not fare for children, as it contains battlefield violence and some nudity and sexual content. More information, movie trailers, graphics and other associated materials can be found at the movie website: http://300themovie.warnerbros.com/home.html?dl=undefined
