President Bush Criticizes Emergency Rule in Pakistan

The U.S. government is criticizing the imposition of emergency rule in
Pakistan, and has urged President Pervez Musharraf to quit his military
post.
The White House says Preident Bush will make his first public remarks regarding the situation after meeting with the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, later Monday.
A White House spokeswoman says U.S. officials urged General Musharraf last week not to impose a state of emergency. She said the Bush administration is now calling for a quick return to democracy in Pakistan, with the release of detainees, a restoration of press freedom, and elections held as planned in January.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said the U.S. was reviewing its financial aid to Pakistan. The United States has given Pakistan more than $10 billion in foreign aid since 2001. The U.S. Monday also postponed a defense cooperation meeting with Pakistan planned for this week....
