Yogyakarta, Java, INDONESIA: A number of passengers are trapped inside a plane that burst into flames on landing in Indonesia, reports say. Few official details are currently available, but there appear to be both survivors and fatalities at the scene. Initial reports said that passengers were trapped inside the burning fuselage.
Sources in Australian told EmergencyNet News that the plane's passengers included Australian journalists and diplomatic staff. The journalists had been covering a visit to Indonesia by Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who was not on the plane at the time of the crash, but he was expected to be in Yogyakarta later in the day. "It happened when it overshot beyond the runway and burst into flames," Yogyakarta provincial secretary Bambang Susanto told Reuters through texted messages.
The incident is reported to have occurred at approximately 07:00 local time (00:00GMT). Dozens of injured people have been taken to hospital, but the number of casualties and passengers on board the plane was not immediately known. The cause of the crash is not known at the time of this report, but mulitple witnesses said that the Garuda Boeing 737-400 "burst into flames," upon landing. Rescue, recovery and investigative activities continue at the time of this report....
