Homicide/Suicide Attack At Bagram Air Base During Cheney Visit

Afghan suicide blast kills 19, Cheney escapes unhurt
BAGRAM AFB, AFGHANISTAN: A suicide bomber killed as many as 19 people outside the main US military base in Afghanistan during a visit by Dick Cheney, the US vice-president, the US and Afghan officials said. Initial reports say that one US soldier and an estimated 18 Afghans died in the blast. At least 20 others are believed to be wounded.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing and said Mr. Cheney was the target. Maj. William Mitchell denied this claim, however, and said the American vice-president was safely within the base at the time of the explosion. "The vice president is fine," Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, told reporters.
Mr. Cheney, who spent the night at the Bagram Air Base, left about 90 minutes after the 10:00 am (local time) blast to head for Kabul, 47 Kilometers (27 miles) south of the base, to meet with Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's president....
