"Device" Exploded in Cargo Hold of Air France 747

(ENN) Initial reports are being received of a possible "event" occuring at approx. 16:30EDT at Newark International Airport, Terminal B. The "event" reportedly involved a "sudden flash and smoke" from the cargo hold of a Air France 747 that was about to depart Newark. The Port Authority Police and Sussex County Bomb Squad have responded and the cargo hold is currently be searched for "another device." No injuries were immediately reported. The plane has been pulled away from the terminal building and parts of the airport have been evacuated.

ENN is still gathering additional information and will provide additional reports as more becomes available.


Update: 05/15/96-10:00CDT-Follow-Up Report

(ENN) Subsequent investigation revealed that the "explosion" was probably attributable to a "pressurized container", in an individual suitcase, that discharged and frightened baggage handlers. No arrests were made and one unidentified individual was released immediately following questioning. Airport officials said that they instituted a full "bomb squad response" out of caution and concerns about possible terrorist attacks. Newark International Airport has reportedly been on a heightened state of alert for some period of time.
