Hungary...
Lt. Curry said that he was driving through the Hungarian town of Kaposavar on official business when he saw a large number of people watching a house on fire. Curry said, "I was doing an errand in town when I saw a thick plume of smoke coming from a house. There were 100 to 150 people watching, so I figured it must be taken care of."
Curry than just drove past the scene, but he then decided to go back and take a second look ... something didn't look right to him. When he returned to the burning building, he noticed that the front door was closed. Curry said, "People don't normally close the door behind them when they leave a burning building, so I asked if anyone had been brought out and, of course, no one had. Everyone was just watching the house burn down!"
Lt. Curry made his way through the crowd and kicked the door in. He helped a small boy and his mother to safety outside of the burning building and then returned and helped the father battle the fire upstairs until firefighters arrived.
Curry said, "As I fought my way through the crowd, everyone looked at me as if I was from another planet. But afterwards, the woman's mother came up to me, put her hand on her heart and just said, "Ah, Americans!"
After doing all he could at the scene, Curry returned to his office and collapsed. He had suffered smoke inhalation and was hospitalized overnight on Friday. Lt. Curry is part of 3,000 troops who are stationed in Hungary to support the Bosnian peace mission.
