Explosive Materials Found At Bus Station
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- According to police, about one-third of a pound of powerful military explosives was found in a suit- case at a bus station on Friday. The C-4 explosive, about the size of a bar of soap, was found in a suitcase along with about 1,000 feet of detonation cord. Police said there was no threat of explosion because no detonation cap was attached to the plastic explosive.
Luggage claim workers opened the suitcase Friday after the time limit
for checked luggage in lockers had expired, and found the explosive and
detonation cord inside. They called the police and evacuated the terminal.
The bomb squad then removed the suitcase with the explosive. Police said

ILLINOIS:
Convicted Felon Charged in Killing of CPD Officer
CHICAGO -- A suspect, identified by authorities as Aloysius Oliver, 26,
and who has previous convictions for felony drug and weapons violations,
has been charged with first-degree murder of a police officer for the
fatal shooting of CPD Tactical Officer Eric Lee in a South Side alley on
Sunday night, Deputy Chief Philip Cline said. Lee was taken to Christ
Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead
shortly after 22:00CDT, police officials said.
Lee, 37, was one of three tactical unit police officers riding in a car
near 63rd and Aberdeen Streets at about 21:20CDT Sunday when they came
upon at least two men beating a third man in an alley, police said.
After officers identified themselves as police officers, Oliver allegedly
drew a .357 handgun and fired a single shot, striking Lee in the head,
Cline said. Oliver then allegedly fled down a gangway, but was apprehended
and disarmed by one of Lee's partners. Oliver's gun discharged a second
time while he was being taken into custody, but no one was hit, Cline
said.
As the other man was being pursued down another gangway, he allegedly
pointed a gun at one of Lee's fellow tactical officers. The officer fired
one shot, missing the man, according to Cline. All three police officers
were believed wearing bulletproof vests, Cline said. But, officer Lee's
fatal wounds resulted as he was shot in his head.
A nine-year police veteran and former Marine, Lee had 20 police honorable
mentions and was married and the father of a young daughter, Police Supt.
Terry Hillard said at a news conference Monday morning in Chicago. "He was
a lovable, likable young police officer," Hillard said. Lee is the second
tactical officer killed in the line of duty this year. --

STATE OF NEW YORK:
Pipe Bombs Found In Long Island Car
Thanks to an off-duty NYPD officer equipped with a cell phone, police on Long Island say they caught a teenager with a carload of pipe bombs. Police said the NYPD officer spotted a driver spinning his car in circles and smoking his tires in an East Meadow, New York, parking lot at 14:25EDT Saturday. The officer followed the Honda to a dead-end street and called 911.
Nassau County Police Officer Christian Migliore, responding to the call, said he saw a green military ammunition box in the car's backseat, with a "gray tubular metallic object" sticking out of it. After the driver was ordered out, Migliore searched the car and found that the ammunition box contained three pipe bombs. Police said they later found four more pipe bombs in the car, as well as fuses and bomb-making materials.
The county bomb squad removed the devices, and police impounded the car.
The 17-year-old driver was charged with seven felony counts of criminal
possession of a dangerous weapon and one count of reckless endangerment.
Nassau County police said they were not aware of any pipe bombs being

Tactical Unit Police Officer Shot To Death By Alleged Gangbanger
In a South Side Chicago neighborhood alley known for crossfire between rival street gangs, a plainclothes police officer was shot to death early Saturday morning. A 16-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Officer Brian T Strouse, who was shot in the face and vest.
Strouse was the first Chicago police officer slain in the line of duty since 1999 and the fourth tactical officer gunned down since 1998. Investigators said that Strouse was hit when several bullets were fired from across the street as he was hiding behind a parked van during a surveillance for gang and drug activity. Hours before the 02:00CDT shooting, gang members had exchanged gunfire in the alley. The male teenager, charged as an adult, made a videotaped confession in front of his parents.
The boy is described by police as being a gang member and told police he was acting as security patrol for his gang's drug dealing when he spotted Strouse and began firing. Strouse did not fire back. The teenager was apprehended minutes after the shooting, and his fingerprints were found on a 40-caliber handgun found in another alley across the street. The gun is believed to be the murder weapon. The murder occurred in the 1300 block of West 18th Place. Strouse, who joined the force in 1995, knew the beat. He worked it often, usually on the midnight shift.
A Gulf War veteran, Strouse was deployed to the area early Saturday after neighbors reported gangs were again shooting at one another. In plainclothes but wearing a protective chest vest, Strouse took up a position in the alley while two of his partners hid nearby. The officers were watching several homes for signs of drug dealing or gang activity.
The alley between Loomis and Throop streets is known to residents as "a shooting gallery" where rival gang members taunt, shout at and fire at one another. Strouse was crouched behind a parked van when shots rang out. Witnesses later told police someone had fired at Strouse from across 18th Place. Strouse had been hit twice, taking one bullet in his vest and another in the face. He was taken by ambulance to Cook County Hospital and was pronounced dead at 09:10 CDT...

Deputy And Suspect Involved In Shootout In Martinsville
A Morgan County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds during a shootout with a wanted man. The gun battle happened in Martinsville after a traffic stop. Police said Sergeant Daniel Starnes stopped the suspect after recalling that the youth might be wanted for driving with a suspended license and could possibly be armed with stolen weapons.
After Sergeant Starnes ran a check on the suspect, he returned to the car when the youth began an argument. The whole time Starnes's 19-year-old son played witness to the altercation. During the argument the suspect pulled out a gun and held Starnes at gunpoint.
The suspect fired one shot just missing the deputy's son as he sat in his
father's patrol car. A gun battle began with the son giving his father
assistance after he was able to get the shotgun out of the trunk of the
patrol car. Sergeant Starnes was airlifted to a trauma center with four

Federal Agents Enter Bomb Investigation In Fremont
FREMOMT, CA -- Federal investigators joined Fremont police on Wednesday to help track down whoever has planted a series of bombs in the city's Irvington neighborhood in less than a month. Of the dozen cases being investigated, nine involve bombs that exploded, including one on Tuesday night that damaged a fence and a house window and blew out two windows in a car parked near the intersection of Union and High streets. None of the bombs have injured anyone, but local police and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said the latest explosions are more powerful and causing more damage.
The bombing spree began shortly before the 1 June conviction of Rodney
Blach, who planted bombs at a half-dozen spots in Fremont three years ago.
But authorities say, so far, that there is no connection to that case.
Police say that the bombs have been discovered in roughly a five-block by
five-block concentrated area since 18 May. Police have no suspects in the
case and it remains under intense investigation...

Federal Authorities Look At Suspicious Fires
Fire destroyed two buildings and several vehicles were destroyed at a tree nursery in Clatskanie, Oregon. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has now entered the case to see if a radical environmentalist organization was responsible for the blaze ignited by explosives. Meanwhile, in Seattle, fire officials determined late Tuesday that arson was to blame for a fire that gutted laboratories and offices at the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture. The FBI said that it was unclear whether the fires were related.
An FBI spokesman said: "If the Seattle fire turns out to be a politically motivated arson, then we're interested. Then we have to look to see if it's connected with anything else." Both fires were reported at about 03:20PDT Monday. No one was injured.
In the Oregon fire, about six pickup trucks, all-terrain vehicles and a semi-trailer at Jefferson Poplar Farms were destroyed along with an equipment storage building and a maintenance building. A number of undetonated explosives were found by arson investigators near the nursery's office building. The letters "ELF" were written on the side of a building, as was the phrase "You cannot control what is wild."

New Report Says Militia Movement Just A Shadow Of Its Former Self
A new reports says that six years after the Oklahoma City bombing, the anti-government movement that spawned such a deadly attack, has been reduced to "a shadow of its former self." According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremist groups, the militia - or so-called "patriot" - movement had by last year steadily declined to 194 identifiable groups. Mark Potok, editor of the organization's intelligence project, which published the report, said: "It's a symbolic moment."
The report defines the patriot movement as being
characterized by armed militiamen angry at the federal government. The law
center, based in Montgomery, Alabama, says the militia movement, which
began developing in the early 1990s, reached a peak of 858 groups in 1996.
The report said that last year's total represented a nine percent decline
from the previous year, its fourth consecutive annual drop. Potok
explained: "People have left the militia movement for a variety of
reasons. They have gone home, disillusioned and tired of waiting for the
revolution that never seems to come."

KCMO Police Officer Killed In Motorcycle Accident
Police officials said that an 11-year veteran of the Kansas City Police Department was killed on Wednesday while responding on his motorcycle to a traffic accident. Officer Craig Schultz was traveling southbound on Interstate 29 responding to a rollover on the highway when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle. There are no indications any other vehicles were involved.
The 36-year-old Schultz was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they were investigating whether a slick spot in the road, from oil or antifreeze, had contributed to the wreck. Prior to his death, Schultz had notified a dispatcher that he was heading to the scene of an accident on southbound I-29 east of North Oak Trafficway. A man involved in that accident was treated and released from Liberty Hospital.
At 12:08 CDT, Schultz's emergency locator button was activated, sending a distress signal. An officer can press that button, or it turns on automatically if the microphone is detached from the officer's radio. All police units in the area began to search for Schultz.
Fire Department personnel found Schultz at 12:12CDT on I-29 under a bridge that is part of the Interstate 635 interchange. His motorcycle was on its side in the left lane with the front wheel facing south. Schultz hit the guardrail. Police officials said they were told that Schultz had suffered serious head trauma even though he was wearing his helmet on impact.
Officials also said they did not know of any potholes or
uneven paving in the area. Beyond that, few details of the accident could
be provided until the investigation is completed.

RCMP Officer Shot In British Columbia
A member of the RCMP was shot twice but was likely saved by a bulletproof vest on Saturday night (24 Mar) after trying to stop a vehicle in which the driver was suspected of driving with a prohibited license. The RCMP said the officer was going to check a vehicle he spotted driving in downtown Salmon Arm, British Columbia, when the vehicle with a father and son inside took off.
The pursuing officer called off the chase because of high traffic in the area. The vehicle, however, turned into a driveway and a fight broke out between the officer and a man police suspected had been driving with a suspended license. The 59-year-old male went into the house, returned and started shooting at the officer. The officer returned fire.
In the gunfire exchange, the officer was hit once in the
chest and once in the leg. The father was hit in the hip and his son was
struck in the head. Police believe the son was struck by a bullet fired by
his father. The son was reported to be in critical condition. The suspect
was in stable condition. Salmon Arm is located northeast of Vancouver.

Montgomery County Police School Shooting Procedures
Montgomery County police are trying to make sure
another Columbine or Santana High School incident does not happen in the
county. Chief Charles Moose said police officers and the school district have
met and rehearsed scenarios about how to react to a school shooter. Every
police officer now has a map of the schools in his area and stops by the
schools periodically. The Chief says the police have not gone over evacuation
practices because each school is responsible for planning escape routes out of
the building. Individual officers are now trained to go after the shooter
before the police SWAT team arrives.

CHICAGO, IL PD MAJOR-CRIME REPORTS:
Three Gang-bangers Charged In Firebombing That Killed Boy
Police on Friday announced charges against three men in the firebombing death last weekend of a young boy on Chicago's West Side. Gang members looking to avenge the fatal shooting of a fellow gangbanger earlier in the day are said to had carried out the attack. Police said the men had mistakenly believed that the man who gunned down their friend lived at 1330 North Parkside Avenue when one of them tossed a Molotov cocktail on 10 March through the front window, gutting the home and killing a 4-year-old boy.
Two men, aged 21, and a 23-year-old suspect were picked up by officers earlier in the week and charged early Friday with first-degree murder, aggravated arson and four counts of attempted murder. All three gave videotaped confessions and police were able to recover forensic evidence tying the men to the crime. Grand Central Area Commander Gerard Mahnke said of the gangbangers: "As soon as we got one in custody, they started giving each other up."
CPD Bomb and Arson Sergeant Mike Gerhardstein said police
believe the plan was to use the fire to flush their intended target out of the
house so they could shoot him. The young boy's death came during a violent
cycle of revenge between two rival gangs operating on Chicago's far West Side.
Mahnke said detectives were convinced that the boy was the unintended victim
of a plot to target the man who they and police believe shot and killed a
24-year-old gangbanger about 11 hours before the firebomb attack.
