OPINION/EDITORIAL
Why Oliver "Buck" Revell Should Become New FBI Director
By Steve Macko, ERRI Managing Editor
With the White House now in search of new director for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, ERRI would respectfully submit the name of Oliver "Buck" Revell for the position. It is our opinion that Revell, who had a legendary 30-year career with the FBI, is more qualified than any other candidate for the job.
Since the passing of J Edgar Hoover, who Revell did work under, the directorship of the FBI -- except for L Patrick Gray -- has gone mostly to former judges. ERRI says the Bush administration can really send a message by nominating a real "cop" to the position.
Revell's credentials cannot be ignored. In the 1990's the emphasis of the FBI turned mainly toward national security and terrorism issues. Revell is a recognized and renown expert in these fields. Revell was the FBI's most decorated investigator and rose to the number three position in the bureau. For 11 years, he headed the FBI's Counterterrorism Division.
"Buck," as he is widely known, directed or participated in virtually every major FBI investigation during his 30 years of service. He was involved in organized crime investigations, with the ABSCAM investigation, the Iran-Contra Affair, Watergate, the rescue of the Shah of Iran, the World Trade Center bombing, the Oklahoma City federal building bombing, Gulf War antiterrorist operations, the infamous Savings and Loan scandal, the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing and many, many more famous FBI cases and operations.
Revell is the man who crafted the nation's counter-terrorism policy. He was, during his career, known to be a visionary and progressive. He was responsible for all the FBI's investigative, intelligence, and liaison programs.
This man, essentially, has seen and handled it all already and knows the ins-and-outs and the ways of the FBI. Who else could possibly have more experience or be better qualified for the job?
Morale at the FBI is said to currently low. Who would be better then Revell, who was well-known and popular with the agents in the field, to turn the FBI around?
Mr President, we respectfully submit that if you already believe that the FBI is the premier law enforcement agency in the world -- as we do -- just put it in the hands of "Buck" Revell and see what he can really do with it. Let's put a real "cop" in the job. There is no better choice or better qualified candidate than Oliver "Buck" Revell.
