Man Walks Into Business And Opens Fire; Killing Two

A camouflaged gunman shot and killed two employees at a boat repair shop and wounded two others before vanishing somewhere into the city on Wednesday. Residents of Seattle were said to be fearful as police continued to look for the shooter. The shooting prompted a massive manhunt through streets north of the downtown area.

The gunman's motive and identity were unknown. Police said he seemed to know his target, and walked into the Northlake Shipyard building before heading directly to a small back office and opened fire. Police said survivors told them that the man said nothing before firing seven to nine rounds from a 9mm handgun.

A 19-year-old man who survived with a gunshot wound in his arm told police the gunman didn't work at the shop and he had never seen him before. The suspect, described as possibly in his 30s, was wearing an overcoat, camouflage clothing and a brown hat. He also wore a baseball cap and sunglasses.

The shooting occurred in an industrial area on the edge of Lake Union, a few blocks from the Wallingford neighborhood, a popular area of older wood-frame houses. The King County medical examiner's office identified the slain as one 43-year-old man and a 26-year-old man whose uncles own the yard. One survivor, a 58-year-old man, was in serious condition with a gun-shot wound to the chest.

The suspect remains at large at the time of this report (09:30CST - 04 Nov 99) and an extensive manhunt, throughout the northwest United States is said to be underway.

Gunman in Seattle Shooting Remains Fugitive

Seattle, WA (Emergencynet News) -- The gunman, suspected of killing two people and wounding two others at the Northlake Shipyard earlier today, remains at large at this hour. Police reportedly have enlarged their dragnet and are devoting all available manpower to a search for the fugitive, who apparently has managed to escaped detection and has probably left the area of the shooting.  According to the Associated Press, authorities are not ruling out the possibility that the suspect fled by boat.

A victim, interviewed by police, said that he couldn't identify the gunman and that he hadn't been seen at the shipyard before. Seattle Mayor Paul Schell asked for the public's help in finding the gunman, but cautioned that citizens shouldn't confront the suspect. If the suspect is seen, the Mayor said that the public should contact their local police department at the earliest opportunity. The search and investigation continues at this hour. EmergencyNet News will provide additional details as circumstances warrant...

A "major and expanding manhunt" is reportedly underway at the time of this report. No motive or other explanation of the shooting is known.

EMS sources in Seattle say that they can confirm that three people have been wounded, two critically, and that one person is feared dead as the result of a multiple shooting in the Northlake Shipyard complex. At least two nearby schools are reportedly in "lock-down mode," largely undertaken as a precaution.
