Disgruntled Employee Kills Seven Co-Workers

Police said a man described as a quiet, reclusive Xerox technician shot and killed seven of his co-workers and later surrendered to police on Tuesday after a five-hour standoff. Tuesday's events were said to be the bloodiest shooting rampage in Hawaii's history.

The 40-year-old technician was reportedly about to be fired from his job after 15 years when he burst into a Xerox parts warehouse and opened fire with a 9 mm pistol, killing seven people. He then fled in a green company van and was cornered by police at the Hawaii Nature Center. He remained there for five hours, surrounded by dozens of heavily armed police until he was convinced to get out of the van with his hands up and fall to his knees in surrender.

The gunman burst into a Xerox conference room shortly after 0800 hours local time, where he opened fire with a 9 mm pistol, targeting members of a technical group that he worked with. Five people were killed in the conference room and another two were found dead in a nearby work area. No others were wounded in the assault.

The attack occurred in the Xerox warehouse, which is located on a busy highway near the city's downtown. Police evacuated a second Xerox facility on the island in case the gunman went there. The suspect will shortly be arraigned on multiple murder charges.

Negotiations Underway with Surrounded Suspect

(EmergencyNet News) According to Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris, the man suspected of committing a multiple homicide this morning at a Xerox corporation facility is presently surrounded by police and SWAT teams. Negotiations are said to be underway in an attempt to prevent further violence and to try to persuade the gunman to give himself up. Mayor Harris said that the situation is believed "to be contained" and that the danger to the public is diminished at this time.  ERRI risk analysts say, however, that concerns remain that the gunman may try to commit suicide or engage in a gun-battle with police officers.
